E3 2018: what we learnt

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, took place in California last week. It is a key event for gamers as big releases are often announced or teased by the likes of Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony.

This year’s event was packed full of huge news regarding the gaming industry! From what we’ve learnt, we’re in for a real treat in 2019. We looked at the biggest stories that broke at E3.

Microsoft

Arguably, Microsoft had the busiest briefing at E3. They had game announcements coming out of their ears! So, if you’re an Xbox user, there is a plethora of amazing content coming your way in the near future.

50 games in total coming your way

That includes 18 Xbox exclusives and 15 world premieres. Microsoft’s Head of Xbox Phil Spencer took to the stage at E3 to ensure the audience knew his company have been listening to feedback carefully so confidence can be restored in the brand. The announcement included Forza Horizon 4, Dying Light 2 and a new Gears of War game.

Halo Infinite

The Halo series is widely considered to be some of the best first-person shooter games of all time. It all began with Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001 and the latest instalment was announced at E3. Halo Infinite is coming to Xbox, but we are yet to find out a release date.

Skate 4?

Not quite. Session was announced, a skate game that looks to fall in line with the Skate series. This one divided opinion – people really want the next Skate!

New console incoming

Phil Spencer was open about the fact development has already begun on the next Microsoft consoles. Yep, you read that right, there is likely to be more than one. So far, that’s about all we know – no date has been given, but with development underway, the consoles may be available sooner rather than later. There are only whispers at the moment but it had lead some to believe the next Microsoft model will be released as early as 2020. Xbox streamed the briefing – skip to 1:00 for all the good stuff!

Kingdom Hearts III

A new trailer for Kingdom Hearts III, due for release on January 29, premiered at E3. There are a whole host of amazing characters within the game; including Wreck-It-Ralph and Frozen’s Anna, Elsa and Olaf.

Sony

From feast to famine – there were far fewer announcements on Sony’s end but what was announced will still whet your appetite. They chose their E3 slot to offer a more in-depth look into what we already knew what happening.

The Last of Us Part II

You could argue that The Last of Us gameplay trailer was the most exciting part of Sony’s announcement – and we would probably agree. The gameplay is almost 12 minutes long, opening with Ellie hanging out with her girlfriend at a party before a brutal shift to Ellie on a bit of a killing spree. It looks like it’ll be an amazing game!

Ghost of Tsushima

Battling through a war-torn Japan has never looked so beautiful. Ghost of Tsushima doesn’t have a release date just yet, but it’s being developed by Sucker Punch, the studio behind Infamous.

Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding’s trailer showed the actual game for the first time. It’s not for the faint hearted.

Resident Evil 2 Remaster

We do have a release date for this one! Alongside the trailer, Sony announced Resident Evil 2 will be available in January and it’s coming to Xbox One and PC too.

That’s not all…

Sony also announced A PSVR game called Déraciné, showcased a more in-depth look to Spider-Man which is being released in just three short months and had their own Kingdom Hearts III trailer with Pirates of the Caribbean characters.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ultimate it is. This game will have every character ever in any Smash Bros. game as well as some new ones. That amounts to more than 60 possible fighters! It’ll also be compatible with GameCube controllers as that truly is the only way to play it. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out in December.
